Located on the left bank of the Red River, about 15km from Hanoi’s center, Bat Trang is Vietnam’s oldest and most iconic ceramic village, dating back to the 14th century. The name “Bat Trang” translates to “a large yard for ceramics,” symbolizing its long-standing history as a hub for artistic excellence and traditional craftsmanship.

This tour is uniquely led by local experts, taking you to meet Master Artisan Nguyen Quang Huy. Born and raised in the heart of the village, Mr. Huy represents the soul of Bat Trang’s heritage, offering you an authentic and deep-rooted perspective that only a local can provide.
TOUR SCHEDULE
07:30 AM | GATHERING Meet at Moss Cafe – No. 10 Thi Sach Street, Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi.
07:45 AM – 08:00 AM | DEPARTURE Depart from Hanoi and head towards Bat Trang Ceramic Village.
09:00 AM | MEETING THE MASTER ARTISAN Arrive at the workshop and meet Master Artisan Nguyen Quang Huy. Hear his personal stories about growing up in the village and the evolution of Bat Trang pottery.
09:30 AM | HISTORICAL & CULTURAL EXPLORATION Begin a walking tour through the narrow, ancient alleys to discover the village’s hidden gems:
- Nha Vuong (Square House): Visit the historic home of Mr. Dang Thanh (locally known as Mr. Loi).
- Chu Nom Calligraphy: Experience the traditional Vietnamese art of “Xin Chu” (seeking auspicious characters) and learn about the ancient Nom script.
- Van Chi & Communal Temple: Explore the village’s old school and temple, the spiritual and educational center for generations of Bat Trang residents.
- Ceramic Production & Hand-Painting: Visit the active kilns to see how modern production meets traditional hand-painted techniques.
- The Musician’s House: A special visit to the residence of the late musician Vuong Van Tao.
- Ceramic Market (Cho Su): A vibrant marketplace showcasing thousands of diverse ceramic products.
- Hands-on Experience: Visit Lan Nam Workshop for a closed-loop production experience. Here, you can try your hand at the wheel and learn the step-by-step process of creating a ceramic piece.
12:30 PM | CULINARY HIGHLIGHT: THE “CO BAT TRANG” FEAST Enjoy the most special part of the day: a traditional Bat Trang feast. This unique culinary experience was officially recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2025. You will savor authentic dishes that have been passed down through generations, representing the sophisticated spirit of the village.
